Exploring Dijon & the surroundings
Former capital of the Dukes of Burgundy, Dijon combines heritage, gastronomy and great wines. The historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site as part of the Climats of Burgundy, is about 5 km from the hotel; the Route des Grands Crus starts in Chenôve and Marsannay-la-Côte, just around the corner.
Old Chenôve & the Dukes' wine presses
In the heart of the old village, the two presses of the Dukes of Burgundy, rebuilt around 1400, are the last mobile-counterweight wine presses still in their original place. They are still operated during the Fête de la Pressée, on the third weekend of September.
Chenôve plateau
Waymarked trails through the vines and over the plateau (387 m): views over Dijon, the Saône plain and, on a clear day, the Jura and Mont Blanc. Loops of 1.5 to 3 hours starting from the old village.
Route des Grands Crus
From Marsannay-la-Côte to Santenay, 60 km of wine villages: Fixin, Gevrey-Chambertin (9 km), Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeot, Nuits-Saint-Georges (22 km). Cellars and estates open for tastings, including the Château de Marsannay 3 km away.
Parc de la Colombière
A grand 17th-century formal park designed by a pupil of Le Nôtre, on the banks of the Ouche: shaded avenues, animals, playgrounds and the remains of a Roman road. Perfect for a morning run.
Ducal Palace & historic centre
Place de la Libération, the Palace of the Dukes and Estates of Burgundy, the Philippe le Bon tower (316 steps, views over the rooftops), mansions and half-timbered houses. Follow the Owl Trail marked on the pavement and touch the owl of Notre-Dame church with your left hand to make a wish.
Museum of Fine Arts
Housed in the Ducal Palace, one of the oldest museums in France: the tombs of the Dukes of Burgundy, Flemish primitives, modern art. Free admission to the permanent collections.
Les Halles market
Iron market hall of 1875 inspired by Baltard: market on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings. Cheeses (Époisses, Cîteaux), snails, jambon persillé, gingerbread and mustard. Brunch at Les Halles on some summer Sundays.
International City of Gastronomy and Wine
Next to the station, in the former general hospital: exhibitions on the French gastronomic meal, the Ferrandi cooking school, a cellar of 3,000 wines, restaurants and shops.
Well of Moses
Claus Sluter's masterpiece (c. 1400) in the former Charterhouse of Champmol, burial place of the Dukes of Burgundy: six life-size prophets carved around a monumental base.
Lake Kir
A 37-hectare lake west of Dijon: 3 km lakeside walk, supervised beach in summer, canoeing, sailing and a cycle path towards the Ouche valley and the Burgundy canal.
Château du Clos de Vougeot
Home of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, in the middle of Burgundy's largest walled vineyard: 12th-century Cistercian cellar, medieval presses and vat room. Open all year round.
Cîteaux Abbey
Mother abbey of the Cistercian order, founded in 1098 and still home to a community of monks. Guided tours in season and a shop selling the abbey's products (Cîteaux cheese, sweets).
Beaune & the Hospices
Wine capital of Burgundy: the Hôtel-Dieu with its glazed-tile roofs (1443) and its Last Judgement altarpiece, ramparts, merchants' cellars, the Fallot mustard mill and the wine auction in November.
Museum of Burgundian Life
In the cloister of the Bernardine convent: reconstructed 19th-century Dijon shops and interiors, costumes and traditions. Free, as is the neighbouring Museum of Sacred Art.
